About Ed Jones

Ed has recently returned from 9 months working in Uganda with his wife Kate. This is a blog of their experiences at Kisiizi Hospital. Ed is a project manager with an interest in technology and many other things. Kate is a paediatrician.

Before leaving the UK Ed worked for Riverford Organic Vegetables, managing IT projects. He’s learned the difference between Calabrese and Broccoli, and what to do with Swiss Chard.

Before this, he was a technical project manager for the excellent Mando Group, a web design, software development and marketing consultancy in Liverpool. Ed has a degree in education, and still enjoys teaching and training people when the need arises. He has also spent 3 years working as a broadcast and IT engineer for the GWR radio group (subsequently GCAP Media and now Global Radio – it’s a consolidating market!).

The line between work and play blurs with Ed’s interest in technical things. While reading the manual tends to be the action of last resort, he doesn’t break stuff for long, which is nice. Longstanding interests include Linux (Ubuntu being his preferred distribution), the Ruby scripting language, and anything web-related, augmented from time to time by other things.

Ed and Kate were supported in their Ugandan work by Tavistock Methodist Church in—unsurprisingly—Tavistock, Devon; and by many other wonderful contributors.

About this site

The site is hosted at Joyent, running Textpattern. Although Ed’s a big fan of Rails (and lately interested in Merb too), a PHP app like Textpattern is ready quicker, and has a smaller memory footprint too.
